    Responsibilities

    We are currently seeking a highly motivated, forward-thinking energy technology enthusiast to assist with the operation of our SureSource fleet of fuel cell power plants and to contribute to testing of our innovative technologies in a highly technical and growing industry. 

     

    The Associate Engineer-Test and Operations will be responsible for contributing engineering support to the monitoring, analysis and operation of a fleet of power plants as well as contributing to the development and testing of new technologies. This position reports to the Manager-Test and Operations Engineering, and involves collaboration with all Engineering departments as well as direct communication and support for our Technology and Service departments.

     

    This role will work with cross-functional team testing and operating a complex process involving the fuel cell as the heart of the system that supports the electro-chemical reaction and power generation with many supporting elements including: the Electrical Balance of Plant (Inverters, Switchgear, Transformers), Mechanical Balance of Plant (Piping, Instrumentation, blower, pumps, valves, chemical catalyst beds and reactors, heat exchangers), and Site Balance of Plant Equipment.

     

    In addition to supporting Power Plant Operations, this position is also responsible for providing engineering support to plant start-ups and commissioning, power plant trouble-shooting, and actively participating in new power plant design engineering activity including review and input to Heat and Material Balances, Process and Instrument Diagrams, HAZOPs, and contributing to design reviews, Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Action, and other Multi-disciplinary group activities.

    • Reviews historical and real time data from the SureSource™ power plant fleet.
    • Provides engineering recommendations for the operation, service, design and manufacture of all FuelCell Energy products.
    • Reviews test data, analyzes and interprets results, shares key findings with the manager; prepares presentations of key observations and recommendations and reviews with technology, manufacturing and engineering departments.
    • Performs operations on individual power plants during critical periods.
    • Continues development of procedures and best practices for the operation and analysis of the fleet.
    • Executes a variety of tests on fuel cell stacks, following test protocol and operates test facilities.
    • Collaborates cross functionally with all Engineering, Service, Planning, and Technology Departments.
    • Participates in the “on-call” rotation to respond to alarms and outages, and ensure that we support the fleet 24/7, 365 days per year.
    • Performs other tasks as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Education:   Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related engineering field

     

    Experience:  0 to 2 years’ experience in planning and execution of tests on chemical process and systems, preferably in fuel cells or batteries, and interpretation of results. Applicable academic experience will be considered.

     

    Special Skills:

    • Demonstrable understanding of chemical engineering processes, chemical process control, chemical reaction, thermodynamics.
    • Able to interpret data with an understanding of physical systems (chemical, electrochemical, mechanical and fluids) to form engineering recommendations for the optimization of operational longevity and power production.
    • Able to interpret operation and test data and generate written and verbal presentations.
    • Proficient in the use of software such as Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint, data interpretation and analysis.
    • Have excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Able to communicate effectively with people within and outside of the company
    • Must have strong presentation skills
    • Must be a team player
    • Must be available for on-call rotation to respond to alarms & outages in FuelCell Energy facilities.
    • Knowledge and experience of electrochemistry or fuel cell/battery is a plus.
    • Experience with systems level process operation, specifically power generation is a plus
    • Knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a plus.

    Working Environment/Working Conditions:

     

    This position is primarily located indoors. This position requires physical movement between separated rooms within the same building in various chemical/laboratory test station as well as working at a desk for computer related work. Physical requirements also include the ability to:

    • Test facility environment and office environment
    • Standing and walking in the test facility or sitting (in the office or at the facility)
    • Occasional work with wrenches as needed to connect or remove tube fittings
    • Ability to remain on feet and move from area to area within the test facility area
    • Computer work for extended periods of time is also required
    • Ability to distinguish color
    • Periodic domestic travel may be required (<10%).
