We are looking for an experienced and innovative engineer to help provide solutions in a highly technical and growing industry.



Dynamic and technically challenging role for a mechanical engineer in the Advanced Technology Group within FuelCell Energy developing new designs and energy systems to meet unique challenges for various customers.  This position will be responsible for developing new fuel cell modules for very large carbon capture systems based on Molten Carbonate technology.  Technical areas range from vessel designs, materials (ceramics nickel alloys, insulation), oxidizer (catalysts) or burner design, advanced manufacturing (rapid prototyping, laser welding, sheet metal, hydroforming, brazing), process design, and thermodynamics.  Must be versatile and willing to become proficient in many skills and take charge of all manner of engineering challenges associated with bringing a new concept to reality. Must be highly functional in a multi-tasking development work environment, and demonstrate the capacity to work on multiple projects for the Advanced Technology Group.


  • Ability to start with basic requirements and develop a complete mechanical design, including modeling, analysis, drawing generation, vendor selection, build support, and testing as required.
  • Must have excellent understanding of basic structural and thermodynamic principles and be able to quickly bound a problem or check the feasibility of a design by doing hand calculations.
  • Coordinates and manages technical design packages that undergo rapid changes as requirements evolve, and facilitates design decisions through analysis and design reviews and presentations to other team members.
  • Models all designs using Autodesk Inventor (preferred) and/or Solid Works solid modeling experience. Must be able to perform, or at a minimum, define and direct CFD and FEA using ANSYS (preferred), or SolidWorks Simulation.
  • Reads and helps develop Process and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs) for the purpose of packaging process instruments and equipment within the system 3D model.
  • Produces and checks engineering drawings and equipment specifications.
  • Prepares and presents CAD designs and packaging concepts to other members of the team using an appropriate method such as MS Power Point, Design Review, or other.
  • Works with component and equipment vendors to co-develop innovative designs that will meet the unique requirements of high temperature fuel cell systems (SOFC & MCFC).
  • Work duties include hands-on assistance with physical assembly or construction of some components and/or systems and/or test set-ups.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.


Job Scope:

  • 70% Modeling, analysis (CFD & FEA), and drawing creation
  • 15% Project management and vendor support
  • 10% Review of designs, analysis and system arrangements.
  • 5% Hands-on manufacturing/testing:  Assisting with assembly or builds, and designing tooling to assist with builds or test set-ups.



Education:    Must have BSME or equivalent discipline; advanced engineering degree preferred 



Education:    Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience.


Candidate  must  have / be:


  • Some experience in mechanical, fluid, and thermal design and analysis. Very familiar with stress analysis and parametric solid modeling.
  • Able to back-up technical work with good engineering judgment as well as appropriate thermodynamic and/or structural hand calculations, and in some cases confirmed with FEA/CFD.
  • Expert at producing detailed solid models of components and complex systems using Autodesk Inventor and/or Solid Works, and manage a Microsoft Excel based Bill of Materials (BOM) consisting of approximately 500 unique line items.
  • Able to create detailed build-to-print engineering drawings taking into account availability of materials, manufacturing processes, packaging, and cost issues, especially for metal fabrications.
  • Comfortable with multi-tasking, working in an environment that requires rapid design changes, and take the initiative to address all impacted areas associated with the developing design.


Candidate  preferred experiences:


  • Understanding of fuel cell systems, especially high temperature fuel cells (SOFC & MCFC) would be beneficial, or alternatively, high value commercial or aerospace components.
  • Strong structural, mechanical, and fabrication experience, especially with stainless steels.
  • Test experience, especially with writing test plans and setting up experiments is helpful.
  • Product development and project management and scheduling (Microsoft Project) experience preferred.
  • Experience with instrumentation such as thermocouples, pressure transducers, flow elements, and associated I/O equipment
  • Experience with systems that involve, gas flows, bellows, process equipment, and materials (metals, ceramics, and insulation), for high temperature applications (>1000F).
  • Burner design and/or oxidizer (catalyst) experience would be beneficial.


Physical Requirements/Working Conditions


  • Must be able to work using computer equipment and attend meetings in various areas throughout the buildings as required
  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment, as designated, when required to perform occasional field work. This will involve climbing ladders to perform inspections.
  • Must be able to travel domestically and internationally, up to 10% of the year
  • Must to able to successfully obtain and maintain a valid passport for international travel
