Responsibilities

 

Under the direction of a scientist or engineer, the Research Technician:

  • Performs a variety of tests and experiments associated with wet chemistry, wet ceramic powder synthesis, powder processing, and powder characterization;
  • Prepares experimental set ups and carries out the laboratory work needed;
  • Conducts laboratory experiments and maintenance for the evaluation of sulfur control systems and fuel processing catalysts;
  • Runs analytical lab tests, as necessary;
  • Assists in developing methods and procedures for ceramic powder processing;
  • Documents and maintains detailed records of ongoing tests and experiments;
  • Organizes data meticulously in both lab notebook and computer spreadsheets;
  • Communicates well with other technicians, scientists, and engineers to explain daily work completed and work remaining;
  • Performs cleaning and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment;
  • Tracks and records chemicals inventory;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:   Minimum of High School or GED and 3 years of related experience; or, Associate’s degree in science, chemistry, engineering (chemistry or chemical engineering/mechanical engineering) and 1 year of related experience.   Direct experience working at FuelCell Energy a “plus”.

 

Experience:

  • Basic wet chemistry;
  • Hands-on, team worker and ability to learn new analytical techniques
  • Microsoft Office (particularly Excel)
  • Experience with catalysts, ceramic powders, powder processing, or ceramic shaping preferred
  • Analytical lab work (powder surface area measurements, ICP, porosimetry, microscopy) preferred
  • Cross-section samples preparation preferred
  • Mechanical experience preferred

Environment:

  • This job will involve mostly laboratory work; must be able to work in laboratory environment, with chemicals using proper personal protective equipment.
  • Works in a shop environment where the employee will typically be standing performing work or moving between various work areas in the same building.
  • Should be able to carry light samples of materials such as powders and lift 30 lbs. regularly.
  • Ability to perform bench top lab work for majority of the day.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motion tasks with full range of motion with both hands/arms, including circular, up and down, back and forth, side to side and overhead.
  • Ability to remain on feet and move from area to area within a shop for a period of eight (8) hours with standard breaks.
