Responsibilities

 

We are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Engineer to join the Advanced Technology team.  You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for designing, building, and commissioning advanced fuel cell-based systems for power generation, hydrogen production, and carbon capture applications.  The Research Engineer will be responsible for developing and utilizing mathematical models to support the development of fuel cell components and systems.  This position requires flexibility to work on multiple projects concurrently.

 

  • Develops and utilizes mathematical models to aid in design of fuel cell components and fuel-cell based systems.
  • Implements models, using programming skills, into computerized solvers.
  • Develops parameter optimization tools to fit models to testing data.
  • Reviews peer-reviewed literature and other credible sources to develop fuel cell performance models.
  • Develops Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models of fuel cell stacks, modules, and related equipment, and reviews CFD models and results created by others.
  • Develops and refines user-defined programs to simulate detailed electrochemical performance of the fuel cell in conjunction with commercially-available CFD tools.
  • Compiles CFD results into reports and presentations.
  • Works with design team to develop improved fuel cell and component designs based on CFD results.
  • May also be required to perform other process engineering functions, such as: Develop Heat and Material Balances (H&MBs), create and/or update Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), develop and document control strategies, and participate in Hazard and Operability Analysis (HAZOP) reviews
  • Prepares technical reports and presentations to communicate designs/results to internal and external stakeholders. Assist with writing project proposals.
  • May deliver formal presentations at industry conferences or technical meetings.
  • Performs other duties and projects, as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications

Education:  M.S. or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or related field

Experience:  2 plus years of relevant work experience with M.S. degree, or 0 plus years of relevant work experience with Ph.D

Required Experience and Characteristics:

  • Experience with developing mathematical models to solve complex engineering problems
  • Strong programming skills using C, C++, Fortran, VBA, or other codes
  • Experience in CFD modelling of electrochemical, thermal/fluid, or combustion processes is desired
  • Experience with implementing User-Defined Functions (UDFs) within the Fluent framework is desired
  • Strong understanding of chemical reaction engineering and thermodynamics
  • Knowledge of electrochemistry or fuel cells/batteries is a plus
  • While model development experience is the primary prerequisite for the Research Engineer position, experience with chemical process design, such as creating PFDs and P&IDs, process simulation, specifying and selecting process equipment (e.g. rotating equipment, heat exchangers, reactors, etc.), specifying and selecting instrumentation, and process safety analysis is desired
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to work effectively and openly with others, both internally and externally
  • Good presentation skills to effectively communicate ideas and scientific findings
  • Team player who works willingly with others and keeps a positive, goal-focused outlook when tackling challenging, time-sensitive engineering problems
  • Flexible and adaptable to rapidly shift gears into multi-disciplinary roles based on current project requirements

Working Environment/Working Conditions:

  • Desk work using a computer.
  • This position is located indoors and requires the ability to move between separated rooms within the same building.
  • Occasional travel via car and/or commercial airlines: 5%.
