Responsibilities

 

We are currently seeking an Equipment Engineer with the ambition and ability to achieve excellent results and find innovative solutions in a highly technical and growing industry.  Join our team and contribute to a brighter, cleaner energy future.

 

The Equipment Engineer will be responsible for design, selection, operation and maintenance of various types of Balance of Plant (BOP) equipment. With minimal support, the Equipment Engineer will work with multi-disciplinary teams on new projects, contributing technically and using product development experience.  This position will manage multiple projects, simultaneously, which will include engineering, selection, and sizing of turbines, pumps, blowers, compressors. In addition, this position will support EHS tasks associated with FuelCell Energy’s power plants.

  • Specifies and evaluates process equipment, including, but not limited to, turbines, pumps, blowers, compressors, and other fuel cell balance of plant equipment in compliance with international codes and standards, project specifications, and general specifications prevalent in gas applications.
  • Coordinates with Supplier Technical Representatives and Design Engineering to resolve Technical Issues.
  • Reviews, edits, understands and complies with all regulatory and facility safety procedures. 
  • Conducts vibration analysis of rotating equipment.
  • Monitors performance of existing power plants for responsible equipment performance issues and executes timely root cause/corrective action studies and reports results.

 

  • Reviews water, oil, and waste water analysis and writes formal reports.
  • Works with suppliers to specify, develop, and qualify equipment / designs for fuel cell balance-of-plant systems with emphasis on cost and performance requirements.
  • Coordinates and conducts periodic supplier meetings to review design effort status and drive completion.
  • Provides support or creates RFI’s (Request For information), NCR’s (Non-Compliance Reports), DVP&R’s (Design Verification Plan & Report), DPP’s (Design Project Plan), ECR’s (Engineering Change Request), ECO’s (Engineering Change Order) and SWO’s (Work orders).
  • Prepares requisition packages and performs technical bid evaluations for the assigned equipment, including but not limited to compressor and blower skids.
  • Provides assistance and advice during procurement, contracting, construction and commissioning activities to ensure project deliverables meet project requirements on time and within budget.
  • Interacts with the Quality team to ensure all project equipment is fabricated and tested to the specified requirements.
  • Supports site installations activities when needed to ensure proper systems startup and recommends design changes to eliminate system faults.
  • Prepares detailed equipment data sheets and works with Mechanical Designers to complete the fabrication drawings. Engineer is responsible for the drawings prepared by the Mechanical Designers.
  • Provides technical support to other departments within the company on any pressure vessel related issues.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned

 

 

 

Qualifications

Education: A minimum BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related Engineering Degree from an accredited college or university.

 

Experience: Minimum 5+ years of experience in a relevant industry (Power Generation, Chemical, Pulp & Paper, etc.); Professional Engineer (PE) certification is a “plus”.

 

The candidate will have / be:

  • Well-rounded hands-on engineer with track record of being able to fill multiple roles and work on varied projects from concept to detailed engineering fabrication.
  • Prior working experience with turbines, pumps, blowers and compressors
  • Working knowledge of ASME PTC- 8.2 Centrifugal Pumps and AMCA 803-02- Industrial Process/Power Generation Fans
  • Understanding of ANSI/AMCA 204-05 Balance Quality and Vibration Levels for Fans
  • Working knowledge or be willing to learn PTC-10 Performance test code on compressor and exhausters
  • Familiarity with Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans, emergency response plans (ERP), air and/or waste water permits.
  • Excellent written and communication skills required for interfacing with other design disciplines, clients, contractors, vendors, field personnel, etc.
  • Experience in reviewing supplier calculations, drawings, P&IDs and other documents required for fabrication of equipment
  • Capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered, coupled with strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Prior experience in water chemistry for boilers and cooling towers, waste water permits, etc.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Inventor is a “plus”

 

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Domestic and International Travel Required: 15%
  • Able to travel between CT locations regularly
  • Ability to obtain/maintain a valid passport and travel without restriction internationally is required.
  • Must be able to work physically in the manufacturing plant or construction site, wearing required personal protective equipment such as safety gloves, hard hats, safety shoes, as designated
  • Lifting up to 25 pounds, walking (standing) in/on a large manufacturing plant, on concrete flooring or uneven installation/construction site for extended periods of time
  • Periodic bending, reaching - working with both hands and arms in full range of motion.; and climbing ladders required to perform inspection of incoming, installed or manufactured parts
  • Ability to hear or be aware of audible danger alerts
  • Ability to remain on feet and move from area to area within a supplier shop or construction site
  • Computer work for extended periods of time is also required
  • Ability to distinguish color
