We are currently seeking a highly motivated, forward-thinking engineering professional to join our Instrumentation & Controls Engineering department.




The I&C Engineer is responsible for designing fuel cell control systems including software and selection of suitable instrumentation and field actuators; evaluating field performance of installed control systems software, instrumentation, and field actuators; developing documentation for new control systems while adhering to product development engineering processes; and maintaining documentation for existing control systems while adhering to design change engineering processes.


Reporting to our Manager - Instrumentation & Controls, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Develops PLC/HMI Software for new and existing control systems;
  • Validates new and modified controls PLC/HMI Software;
  • Tests new and modified fuel cell controls subsystems and integrated control system to validate their suitability;
  • Performs I/O Loop checks on new controls systems and retrofitted existing control systems;
  • Develops new and modifies existing controls logic to meet functionalities described in control philosophies;
  • Improves existing control systems using engineering change and configuration control processes;
  • Prepares and maintains engineering design documentation;
  • Supports troubleshooting and resolution of I&C-related Field Issues;
  • Creates specifications and drawings (schematics, loop sheets, panel drawings, etc.) for PLC and relay logic control systems used in fuel cell control systems;
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned.




Education:   BS in Electrical, Chemical, Electronics Engineering (or related BS with applicable experience).


Experience:  5+ years PLC and HMI programming commercial experience.  Direct experience in FCE fuel cell technology may also be considered.


Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • Must have working knowledge of PLCs, Human Machine Interface (HMI), and how these devices function and communicate to control processes. Must be able to program and configure these devices.
  • Ability to use electrical meters such as multi-meters
  • Special knowledge: Ladder logic and Function Block Programming
  • Knowledge of Instrumentation and Actuators
  • Reasoning, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to interpret drawings electrical and Ioop drawings
  • Possess understanding of field sensors (flow, temperature, pressure and level devices). Excellent verbal and written communication skills coupled with strong people orientation and relationship building skills
  • Strong aptitude and desire to learn fuel cell control systems
  • Ability to work in a team environment including Engineers, Operators and Technicians
  • Work on-call (rotation) as required


Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Office environment where the employee may sit comfortably to do work
  • Some walking, standing, bending, reaching, and carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; driving an automobile, etc.
  • Requires eye-hand coordination
  • Occasional field work on power plants located outdoors, involving use of electronic test equipment and general hand tools
  • On-call rotation duty, as required
  • Occasional travel (10%) – may include international
  • Have or ability to obtain a US passport will be required
  • Must be able to distinguish color
