Responsibilities

The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for design, selection, operation and maintenance of various types of Balance of Plant (BOP) equipment. With minimal support, the Mechanical Engineer will work within multi-disciplinary teams on new projects, contributing technically and using product development experience.  This positon will manage multiple projects, simultaneously, which will include engineering design, selection, and sizing of vessels, heat exchangers, Pressure Swing Absorbers (PSA) and other fuel cell balance-of-plant equipment.

 

  • Designs, develops, specifies and evaluates process equipment including but not limited to pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and other fuel cell balance of plant equipment in compliance with international codes and standards, project specifications, and general specifications prevalent in gas applications
  • Works with suppliers to specify, develop, and qualify equipment / designs for fuel cell balance-of-plant systems with emphasis on cost and performance requirements
  • Coordinates and conducts periodic supplier meetings to review design effort status and drive completion
  • Evaluates mechanical products by applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer
  • Provides support or creates RFI’s (Request For information), NCR’s (Non-Compliance Reports), DVP&R’s (Design Verification Plan & Report), DPP’s (Design Project Plan), ECR’s (Engineering Change Request), ECO’s (Engineering Change Order) and SWO’s (Work orders)
  • Provides assistance and advice during procurement, contracting, construction and commissioning activities to ensure project deliverables meet project requirements on time and within budget
  • Interacts with the Quality and Procurement teams to ensure all project equipment is fabricated and tested to the specified requirements
  • Supports site installations activities when needed to ensure proper systems startup and recommends design changes to eliminate system faults
  • Monitors performance of units for responsible equipment performance issues and executes timely root cause/corrective action studies and report results
  • Provides technical support to other departments within the company on any pressure vessel related issues
  • Prepares equipment data sheets and fabrication drawings and works with Mechanical Designers to complete the fabrication drawings. Engineer is responsible for the drawings prepared by the Mechanical Designers
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned

 

 

Qualifications

Education:  BS Mechanical, BS Civil Engineering or other Engineering Technical Degree from an accredited college or university is required

 

Experience:  :  Minimum 7 + years of relevant commercial engineering experience; Professional Engineer (PE) certification is a plus

 

 

Candidate will have / be:

  • Well-rounded hands-on engineer with track record of being able to fill multiple roles and work on varied projects from concept to detailed engineering fabrication
  • Must have demonstrable working knowledge of ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel (BPVC) VIII, Rules for Construction of Pressure Vessels Division 1, National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) and Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), and knowledge of heat exchanger design and welding practices
  • Must have demonstrable working knowledge of design, fabrication, inspection, maintenance, testing and certification of pressure vessels and B31 piping
  • Must have demonstrable working knowledge of ASME BPVC Section V, Nondestructive Examination and Section IX, Welding and Brazing Qualifications
  • Knowledge of ASME B31 Piping codes, PTC25 Pressure Relief Devices and QA-1 Qualifications for Authorized Inspection is a plus
  • Excellent written and communication skills required for interfacing with other design disciplines, clients, contractors, vendors, field personnel, etc.
  • Able to review and understand supplier calculations, drawings, P&IDs and other documents required for fabrication of equipment
  • Capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered, coupled with strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Prepare requisition packages and perform technical bid evaluations for the assigned equipment, including but not limited to pressure vessels
  • Knowledge of welding and application of weld symbols
  • Knowledge of material types and some of the fabrication process for stainless vs. aluminum vs. carbon steel, etc.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of rotating equipment is a plus
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Inventor is a plus
  • Experience with shell and tube heat exchanger design is a plus
  • Demonstrate strong analytical and problem solving skills. Attention to detail and accuracy and the ability to meet deadlines is imperative as well as having excellent communication, and organization skills through the practice of independent judgment and assessment

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Domestic and International Travel Required: 15%
  • Able to travel between CT locations regularly
  • Ability to obtain/maintain a valid passport and travel without restriction internationally is required
  • Must be able to work physically in the manufacturing plant or construction site, wearing required personal protective equipment such as safety gloves, hard hats, safety shoes, as designated
  • Lifting up to 25 pounds, walking (standing) in/on a large manufacturing plant, on concrete flooring or uneven installation/construction site for extended periods of time
  • Periodic bending, reaching - working with both hands and arms in full range of motion.; and climbing ladders required to perform inspection of incoming, installed or manufactured parts
  • Ability to hear or be aware of audible danger alerts
  • Ability to remain on feet and move from area to area within a supplier shop or construction site
  • Computer work for extended periods of time is also required
  • Ability to distinguish color
